Research ActivitiesDr. Medina has worked as a Principal investigator of three five-year evaluations of the school communityâ€™s $2.4 million and $2.2 million full-service projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education as well as another $2.5 million full-service project with Indiana University Office of Community Engagement and USDOE.
Synergistic Activities - Curriculum Development- Collaborated with faculty from the School of Science and School of Engineering in planning and designing a STEM teacher education program, the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Program. Designed and implemented STEM cultural competency and diversity and learning objectives for the curriculum in compliance with the NCATE standards. Currently, serving as teaching faculty in the program and assisted in the completion of the three-year program evaluation. Founding Organizational Leader- Collaborated with IUPUI and The University of Pennsylvania Netter Center for Community Partnerships to create a Midwest Center for University-Assisted Community Schools. In partnership with the community and business partners, university-assisted community schools draw upon higher education to assist local schools as service support centers for youth, their families, and community members. The strategy recognizes public schools as neighborhood â€œhubs,â€ where partnerships services develop collaborative solutions to social learning and youth development barriers. The collaborative work significantly advances the role of university-assisted community schools in national debates on education reform. Founding Organizational Leader- Latinx Community-University Coalition of Indiana addresses equity and wellbeing across the state of Indiana through interdisciplinary collaborations for research and programmatic service aimed at improving the well-being of the Latino population in Indiana.
Awards â€“2019, Education Leadership- Indy Chamber of Commerce; Alpha Foundation for Youth Latina Educator Award, 2017, Leadership in Education â€“ Indiana Latino Expo; 2014, IUPUI Chancellors Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement; 2013, Latina Educator of the Year Award -Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard. 2013, 125 Neighborhood Leaders Award - Congressman AndrÃ© Carson; 2010 Trail Blazer Award â€“ Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis. In 1993, she received the Indiana Governors Award, Sagamore of the Wabash from Evan Bayh, for her statewide work in HIV education.
Dr. Medina earned her doctorate in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Masterâ€™s in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Indiana University School of Education in Bloomington, Indiana.
