Diversity Speaker Series: Dr. Patricia Hill Collins

Recognized as one of the founding theorists and researchers studying the intersections of race, gender, class, sexuality and nationality, Patricia Hill Collins is a sociologist and former President of the American Sociological Association (ASA). In fact, in 2009 Dr. Hill Collins was the organization’s 100th President and first African American woman elected to the position.
Patricia Hill Collins is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and recognitions including the Jessie Bernard Award and the Distinguished Publication Award from ASA, as well as the C Wright Mills Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. These awards were in recognition of her groundbreaking and inspiring books Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness and the Power of Empowerment (1990, 2008) and Black Sexual Politics: African Americans, Gender and the New Racism (2005).
